The golf course at Hammock Bay Golf & Country Club was designed utilizing a special variety of turf grass called SeaDwarf Seashore Paspalum. Its rich green color provides the appearance of a bluegrass or ryegrass, which may be highlighted quite nicely with specific mowing patterns. Paspalum is not only aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but also provides an excellent year-round playing surface. Its upright nature allows for the ball to sit up in the fairway, almost as if on a tee, making for easier mid-iron and fairway wood shots. The grass also delivers a tight knit and virtually no grain, making for healthy greens that are as fast or faster than ultra dwarf Bermudagrass greens.

Since it may be mowed from below 1/8 inch to over four inches, Paspalum has been utilized here at Hammock Bay from tee-to-green. By using just one variety of turfgrass on the entire golf course, many of the issues that other golf courses face as they try to keep their fairway grass out of their collars and greens are avoided. Any of these areas may be reshaped by mowing a different height and have no contamination issues from other turfgrasses, since the Paspalum is all the same cultivar.

More than that, the SeaDwarf Seashore Paspalum, is a highly environmentally friendly turfgrass. Paspalum requires less than 75% of the nitrogen fertilizer required by Bermudagrass and is more drought tolerant, maintaining its color longer during unusual dry periods and utilizing 30% to 50% less water. Paspalum can also utilize a wide variety of water sources, such as: potable, brackish, effluent and even saltwater. You may feel great not only about playing a better game of golf, but by also helping the environment as a member at Hammock Bay.

Additionally, Paspalum is also more cold tolerant than Bermudagrass, which has afforded Hammock Bay the opportunity to maintain quality playing conditions and good color without over seeding in the winter. The SeaDwarf Paspalum holds its green color during the cold winter months, unlike other turfgrasses in the area, which eliminates the need to overseed with ryegrass during these months. No over seeding means quality playing conditions at times during the fall and spring when many Bermudagrass golf courses are transitioning to and from the over seeded grass.
